Ability Fest 2023

Ability Fest was held on the 25th of March 2023 and The Companion Group had the absolute joy of supporting two of our participants Bronwyn and Ralph attend.

Ashleigh’s account of attending with Bronwyn:

“We found the main stage where we enjoyed a dance and many laughs. We were amazed by people’s costumes and how the event catered for all people's needs. With dedicated rooms for people with sensory needs, they had a silent disco where you wore headphones and had a dance. Bronwyn seemed really relaxed and expressed how happy she was. We engaged well with many volunteers and other festival goers. On the way out we stopped and bought merchandise, many laughs were had trying on the glasses they had for sale.

On the drive back to Geelong, we chatted about the day and how great we felt from being in an environment where everyone was genuinely happy. So good for the soul. Bronwyn enjoyed it that much she was already making plans for next year's event.”

Libby’s account of attending with Ralph:

“Ability Fest is an inclusive, well organised event for people of all abilities. There were staff available to assist carers with wheelchairs and other mobility needs, including a curtesy scooter to transport people up ramps. Disability toilets and ramps to elevated platforms were safe, clean, and well-staffed. The food vans offered a range of multicultural cuisine options. The audience were thoroughly enjoying the music. Many people were dancing, grooving in their wheelchairs and/or singing along. The stage was set up with two large screens, with Auslan interpreters dancing and singing for people to enjoy and appreciate.”

With Ralph adding:

“Arriving at Ability Fest the parking was a breeze. Access from the car park was perfect. Got to main stage and enjoyed the performing acts. Libby was in great form. Very entertaining. Very cool. Thank you to Libby-Jane for looking after me.”
